1080p, 1080i, frame rate of TV, etc. explained below

Meanings of TV tech words begining with Numbers are explained on this page

1080i and 1080p Difference

The figures 1080i and 1080p represent the resolution of a TV picture by the number of horizontal lines of information the picture has. What does the i and p stand for is 'interlaced' and 'progressive'. These are two types of TV scanning by which the image on the TV screen is formed. See Scanning lines of TV on our page 'S' for a fuller explantaion.

100Hz, 120Hz, 240Hz, 600Hz - What is Hz on TVs mean, What is TV Refresh Rate

All the above numbers refer to the refresh rate of TV screen. What is TV refresh rate and What is Hz on TV is explained in details under 'Refresh Rate' and 'Hz' in our website. To summarise Hz is the number of frames in one second that is loaded on to the TV to make an image. A higher Hz on TV is good since it helps in reducing the motion blur. Motion blur occurs on fast moving scenes, like a football looks blurred on the TV screen when it is moving fast. ‘Hz’ is a symbol for 'Hertz' and is a measurement of frequency, the number of cycles per second. So in 100Hz TV the image on the TV screen is shown 100 times or 100 frames per second, instead of the normal 24 frames per second the movie is recorded in the movie studio in Hollywood for example. When transmitting for TV the normal rates of transmission is 60 frames per second under US NTSC standards and 50 frames per second under the UK PAL system.

See Refresh Rate in 'page R' for full explanation.

16:9 TV dimensions

16:9 TV dimensions is the Aspect Ratio of the TV. TV Aspect Ratio means the ratio of the width of the screen against its height. So in 16:9 TV dimensions the width and height will be at a ratio of 16:9. In short if the of the top side of the TV is say 48 inches wide, the height of the side of the TV can be calculated by dividing the width by 16 and multiplying by 9. In the case of a 48 inch wide TV, by dividing 48 by 16 and multiplying the answer by 9 gives 27 inches as the height of the side of the TV. It should be noted here that the size of a TV is the diagonal width of the TV, from top left corner to bottom right corner or vice versa.

3:2 pull-down

3:2 pull down or Three-two pull down is a term used when a movie at 24 frames per second is converted into 30 frames per second for the American NTSC System for broadcast by TV stations. If movies are played on TV directly at the original frame rate of the movie, then there will be flickering of the movie on the TV. The 3:2 pull down conversion is done by a Telecine Machine which adds a third video field to every second video frame. This conversion of original movie 24 frame rate is usually used for video recording of DVDs at 30 frames per second. It is these master videos that is then used by TV stations to broadcast movies.

24p, TV 24p True Cinema, Real Cinema, Cinema Smooth

24p refers to the number of frames per second in a Movie Film. When movies are shot by Holywood Studios, they are filmed or recorded at the rate of 24 frames per second. The movies seen in Cinema Theaters are at 24 frames per second. When you see the same film on TV in USA the frame rate is 30 frames per second to match the NTSC transmission standards. So movies will have faster movements on TV with flickering if the frame rates are not made equal. So 24 frame movies are converted and recorded into videos at 30 frames per second by the 3:2 pull down method described above.

To the purist who want to see the movie at the original 24 frames per second, TV manufacturers have devised technology to convert back the 30 frames TV movies to the original 24 frame movie and to be seen on TVs at 24 frames per second. This becomes a 2:3 pull down and Sony calls this 'True Cinema', LG calls it'Real Cinema' and Samsung calls it 'Cinema Smooth'

3D TV

3D TV gives a feeling that the TV picture you are seeing is in real 3D, for example while watching a football game in 3D, you tend to duck to avoid the ball comming towards you. It is so realistic. See our website WhatTV.Com/3D-TV for full explanation

400 Hz Clear LCD (Philips)

400 Hz refresh rate displays 400 scenes per second and enables sharp pictures even in fast action scenes like sports events.

4:3 Aspect Ratio of TV Screen

This is the Aspect Ratio of a TV whose width to height is in the ratio of 4 is to 3, as explained in the 16:9 Aspect ratio above. Old CRT Tube TVs usually had this ratio and even now, many TV programmes and old movies are in this format.

4K Upscaling

You normally expect to see any input from a DVD or Bluray player on your TV. 4K Upscaling is the process by which any input from standard or HD sources can display on the new Ultra HD TVs. 4K Upscaling is the process of converting Standard SD or HD content to Ultra HD content. For this TV manufacturers are incorporating upconverter hardware known as 4K Upscaling on the new Ultra HD TVs. Standard Definition or SD content is converted into HD content by interpolating extra pixels of picture data into the SD content to make it HD. But it is much more difficult to upconvert SD or HD content to Ultra HD content because of the extremely high pixel density of Ultra HD. Examples of some 4K Upscaling already introduced are Toshiba CEVO 4K processing engine and Sony X-Reality Pro 4K .

5.1 and 7.1 Surround Sound

5.1-channel Surround Sound encodes the audio as five primary (full-range) channels plus a special LFE (low-frequency effects) channel for the subwoofer. The 5 channels of sound come from 5 speakers the centre speaker, 2 front speakers and 2 rear speakers and the .1 in the 5.1 is the sub-woofer. Similarly for 7.1 channel Surround Sound there are seven speakers and one sub woofer.

600Hz Sub-field Drive with Intelligent Frame Creation Pro (Panasonic)

This is a Panasonic's image-analysis processor that converts the motion in each scene into sub-fields. The sub-fields are then optimised to display fast action scene in Full HD (1920 x 1080) resolution with amazingly smooth motion. Each frame is displayed for a shorter length of time than in previous processor - virtually eliminating unsightly smearing after effects. With the 600Hz fast response time and the newly developed fast switching phosphor Panasonic's Viera Plasma TV are excellent for watching sports
